
A murderous lust for the British throne sees Richard III (Ian McKellen) descend into insanity. Although the setting is transposed to the Thirties, England is torn by civil battle, break up between the rivaling homes of York and Lancaster. Richard aspires to a fascist dictatorship, however should first take away the obstacles to his ascension — amongst them his brother, his nephews and his brother’s spouse (Annette Bening). When the Duke of Buckingham (Jim Broadbent) deserts him, Richard’s plans are compromised.
